A brief overview of the new PebblePad software from a PGR supervisor's perspective. Students are now expected to keep an electronic e-portfolio, Training Needs Analysis and Development Plan. This session will show you how to view your student's documents and also introduce you to completing supervisory report forms via the software.

In this time of technology and digitisation and libraries being closed due to funding cuts it's easy to forget about the simplest pleasures in life. One of mine is spending hours in book stores browsing the shelves and handling the books! Come on....I know you feel the same way too. Abstract

The Information Resources team within the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) at the University of Sheffield has a long-standing interest in the application of new and emerging Web 2.0 technologies for research, learning, and teaching.

In early 2008, members of the group began to discuss the development of customized web portals, also referred to as personal start pages, to aggregate various streams of specialist information relevant to researchers within the School and in the wider National Health Service (NHS) research community. This paper documents the background to the portals, their development, and reflects on the challenges and issues the team encountered.

Internet librarian 2011 - Bite Size Technology Sessions to Support Research, Teaching and Collaboration

I’ve been meaning to blog about this for some time, but just to say that I delivered a presentation at the excellent Internet Librarian International 2011 in London late last month. The slides from my presentation are above. It was a really good conference with some a wide variety of interesting hot topics, including both opening sessions on the Thursday and Friday. Klaus Tochtermann, from Leibniz Information Centre for Economics, University of Kiel and Professor of Computer Media opened proceedings on ''How the Future Internet Will Shape Libraries.'

Kevin Anderson opened Friday looking at the problem of information overload and for the first time in my information career found someone who covered the topic so adeptly. Kevin was followed by his wife Suw Charman-Anderson who delivered an equally stimulating presentation on the power of crowd-sourcing.

Other highlights included the ever inventive Phil Bradley and 50 of the latest web sites and tools he had discovered to a packed room. Brian Kelly showed us ‘What’s on the Technology Horizon?’ Whilst Karen Marie Øvern, Gjøvik University College delivered an interesting presentation on her role of teaching academic skills rather than information literacy.

Scirus is a science-specific search engine enabling you to search for patents, peer-reviewed articles, theses and scientists and institutional homepages, an excellent source to search for grey literature.

Do you need to search patents, theses, scientists' homepage and institutional
repositories. Come along to find out about searching Scirus, described as the
most comprehensive scientific research tool on the web. Scirius' focus is
scientific items and it has over 440 million scientific items indexed at last count.
Results can be exported in RIS format so can be put straight into Reference
Manager, Mendeley or Endnote.

The use of video and audio content within Universities is becoming increasingly
common as we move further down the path towards a digital world. This is
especially the case with blended and elearning as a means to deliver content and
engage with students. Video and audio can also be employed as a valuable and
effective marketing tool for our department and courses through mediums such
as the University’s streaming video server 'uPlayer', YouTube and potentially iTunesU. It can be
applied in our research and gives a quick snapshot of what ScHARR does that in
the past meant pages and pages of text. Andy Tattersall and Chris Blackmore will
look at the benefits of audio and video and show the work they have already
done in support of ScHARR’s IHTA P&R course amongst other things. In the
session they will share the many things they have found out along the way as to
what makes a good and bad video.

ScHARR Bite Size are lively, informal 20 minute taster sessions held at Regent Court with a dual focus on research and teaching. Co-run by Andy Tattersall and Jenny Freeman, Bite Size has been running since 2010 and has run nearly 30 sessions on everything from social networks to how (not) to display data. The sessions all begin at 2.30pm on various days of the week and are open to any members of staff from the Medical Faculty and beyond. Bite Size cakes are provided and there's always time for a quick ten minute discussion and Q&A afterwards. Staff can add the Bite Size calendar to their own calendar by typing: scharrbitesize@gmail.com into their list of additional calendars.

MOLE1 and the new MOLE2 virtual learning environment. It will highlight some

of features which have been discontinued and then look at some of the exciting

The cloud is an ever-popular term that hear mentioned on BT adverts, associated with Apple and Microsoft products, dropped in amongst various tech programs on the tv and in the press. What is the cloud, should we take notice of it? The simple answer is yes, like fashion we're tied to wearing only the clothes that are available in the shops driven by the designers (unless you can stitch together your own clothes). The technology designers drive how we work and they want us up the cloud as quick as possible (unless you can stitch together your own programs).

Cloud computing is the process of using software and accessing data without the need of knowing where the phsyical location and configeration of the system that runs the services is. It allows the use of data and tools from any location via an Internet connection. Whilst the data you employ with these services has become open for scrutinty, whether it be personal or private content. It has also highlighted the short-comings in copyright legislation as the law stays one or two steps behind the technology.

How we teach is a particular area of concern, as after 20 years of using PowerPoint aided with 'stolen' images and content from the Web - we are now hosting this content on the Web and the Cloud - this bad practice (that most of us have been guilty of some time or another). Whether this is the Internet or Intranet is irrelevant. To go in the direction we are going without taking heed of copyright leaves us open for scrutiny and attention that we would not wish to entertain.

This session run by myself gives a brief overview into where we are going, the problems we face and how we could do a few simple things to avoid any serious pitfalls.

On Tuesday 12th July 2011 Andrew Booth, Reader in Evidence Based Information Practice and Director of Information at the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), University of Sheffield was awarded the Cyril Barnard Memorial Prize.

The Cyril Barnard Memorial Prize is awarded by the Health Libraries Group Committee in recognition of outstanding services to medical librarianship and is awarded every three years. The award was presented at the CILIP Health Libraries Group Annual General Meeting at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield.

Our roving information specialist Helen Buckley Woods reports from EAHIL 2011

Hello from the EAHIL conference in Istanbul. The theme of this year’s conference is “Active Learning and Research Partners in Health” With delegates from 38 countries there is a positive feeling of sharing best practice and a real sense of partnership across Europe and beyond. I must be feeling that conference optimism – long may it prevail! The conference is in full flow and amongst others I have attended sessions on using the Kirkpatrick model to evaluate e-learning in Prague presented by Helena Bouzkova and Adela Jarolimkova and “e-learning in pills” Funda Topez described the creation of online short films as a cost-effective and time effective alternative for training health care professionals in the business of accessing the research literature. I have also had the pleasure of delivering a pre-conference workshop on active learning and the relationship between the research evidence and teaching practice in information literacy. Tomorrow is the last day with sessions including those on e-readers and e-text and knowledge management.

Andrew Booth named as a leading UK knowledge translator

ScHARR´s Andrew Booth, Reader in Evidence Based Information Practice, has been identified as a key information source for those wishing to learn about new library and information sciences (LIS) research.

This finding is part of the Research in Librarianship – Impact Evaluation Project (RiLIES) from the LIS Research Coalition (LRC), led by Professor Hazel Hall, which surveyed 200 people on their routes to learning about new LIS Research Results. Andrew Booth was highlighted with three other individuals as occupying a key knowledge translation role.

Andrew is a founding member of the international Evidence Based Library and Information Practice movement and co-editor of the only textbook on this topic. This recognition acknowledges his role as feature editor over more than a decade of the Using Evidence In Practice feature in Health Information & Libraries Journal, the most highly-cited health libraries journal.

"My day-to-day work involves the production of knowledge in the form of systematic reviews and working with the NHS through the local National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, South Yorkshire (CLAHRC SY), specifically the Translating Knowledge into Action theme. It is very encouraging to see the same skills that I use in promoting the use of health services research being recognised as equally valuable for my own profession" – Andrew Booth

The Research in Librarianship – Impact Evaluation Project (RiLIES – pronounced "realise") is a study supported by the LIS Research Coalition. It explores the extent to which funded librarianship research projects influence library practice in the UK. Of particular interest are the factors that increase or hinder the impact of project outcomes on practice. This study is led by Professor Hazel Hall, Director of the Centre for Social Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University and Executive Secretary of the Library and Information Science Research Coalition.

The ScHARR Library continued its tradition of cake-fests today with a 2 hour cake-a-thon in aid of the Blue Cross. A ScHARR-wide selection of cake enthusiasts swarmed like locusts through the extensive array of offerings, from Anthea's controversial 'cheese and marmite scones', to Angie's pretentious 'earl grey chocolate fudge cake', via Claire's challengingly dense 'Guinness cake', Andy's toothsome 'chocolatey muesli cookies', Sonia's deceptive 'cheese muffins', Helen's full-on 'blueberry muffins', Pippa's eye-opening 'mocha slice', Anna's mouth-watering 'lemon syrup cake' and Ruth's high-end 'lemon and white chocolate mini-muffins'.

library in Regent Court.

We're hoping to raise some money for a charity whose aim is to save the lives

of unwanted and vulnerable animals.

mocha slices, blueberry muffins, cookies, cheese muffins all home made by

least, we're running a competition which you can enter for £1. All you have to

do is match the owner to the pet! The prize is a £10 Amazon voucher!

And of course, whilst you're visiting the library there are books, journals,

internet resources aplenty as well as a whole gaggle of Information Specialists

on hand in the same room to chat to about any work/course-related queries you

might have. The PCs will still be available to use and there'll be a

designated member of library staff on the enquiry desk.

This afternoon's Bite Size session looks at the electronic voting system - Turning Point.

Graham McElearney joins us again following his entertaining and informative session on Echo360 to present the benefits of using the Turning Point voting system in just 20 minutes.

This afternoon's session will be of particular benefit for anyone involved in teaching and training.

For those who don't know, ScHARR and Public Health have the Turning Point voting system and 160 remote controls that can be applied in teaching, seminars and meetings. So if you would like to make your teaching that bit more interactive, or include anonymous voting in meetings come and join us.

Of course, as per usual there will be bite size cakes available, so bring a hot drink with you and learn something new in 20 minutes!

ScHARR Library Bite Size #7 - uSpace Documents, PBWorks and Disposable Web Pages

Our next bite size session is on Thursday 24th March at 2.30pm in the Pemberton room. The session is all about tools for collaborative documents and workspaces. Details below, hope to see you there!

uSpace Documents, PBWorks and Disposable Web Pages

Fed up of email attachments clogging up your inbox? Collaborating with others on a document and struggling to know which is the most recent version? Spending lots of time collating comments on a document? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then this could be the session for you!

This session will cover several ways to make collaborating on writing documents a whole lot easier. You may already be familiar with uSpace, but did you know you can upload documents allowing others you are working with to edit and add comments. In addition, in this session we will also look at the Wiki PBWorks, which is a free online workspace which allows the easy creation of a project website which can be used for discussions and to upload documents to name a few functions. Finally, we will show you how to create disposable web pages – web pages that are easy to create and that self-destruct after a maximum of 90 days – great for any short-term project work you want to do.

So, come along, see what’s what, and help make email attachments a thing of the past!

Bite Size #5 for Teaching - Echo360

This one's on Echo 360. For anyone that doesn't know, this is a great system for lecture capture. It doesn't just add a voiceover to powerpoint but captures everything on screen, so if you come out of your slides to show students something else such as a web page, or use sympodium to draw on screen it captures the lot. It can also be used for adding a video to your slides.

I stumbled on this diagram by Martin Fenner which documents the differences between various popular reference management packages. It was produced a year ago and is already slightly out of date, such as Mendeley now has an iPhone App and API - nevertheless - it gives a decent snapshot of some of these tools should you wonder what's the difference between CiteuLike and Zotero. It does not include Reference Manager, but does include Endnote which is made by the same company and is very similar.

The Joy of Beautiful Statistics...

Not one, but two things to draw your attention to! First of all, the fantastic, pretty, clever and quite-cheap-depending-on-where-you-buy-it 'Information is Beautiful' by David McCandless- its a book and a website, so I'll let you find the book, but the website is at: http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/ Basically, David is fascinated by the myriad of ways of displaying data visually- from nerve endings in the body to genome sequencing, via maping music and charting the causes of cancer. And his website allows you to 'play' with some of the visualisations for your own entertainment!

Which leads me nicely on to the marvellous Hans Rosling, Swedish statistician/doctor/genius and creator of some fantastically engaging visualisations of statistical trends which challenge our perceptions and preconcieved ideas about the world and how it is changing. Watch his seminal TED Lecture above and be converted.

Students record video of the Earth from edge of space

A little break from the normal but I thought I'd post this brilliant video made by two enterprising students from The University of Sheffield.

Alex Baker and Chris Rose, both PhD students from the University´s Department of Mechanical Engineering, sent a helium-filled balloon with two video cameras and a tracking device up into the atmosphere, filming video and taking pictures as it went.

The balloon was launched from Ashborne, Derbyshire on 17 December 2010, and was in flight for approximately two hours and 50 minutes, before landing in a field in Strethall, Cambridgeshire, a journey of over 100 miles. The location, which is Chris´ home town, was chosen specifically, as it was predicted that launching there would result in the device landing in a rural area.

The video footage, which lasts for two hours, shows the balloon being launched at sunrise and rapidly climbing above the clouds, filming the ground below and eventually showing the curvature of the Earth´s atmosphere. The balloon, after swelling to many times its original size, eventually burst, allowing the parachute to open and the box to descend back to Earth. It is thought that at its maximum height, the balloon reached an altitude of 37km.

The device, which was built by Alex and Chris in their spare time, consisted of a foam box, a parachute for the descent and the balloon. The electronic equipment had to be well insulated due to the extremely cold temperatures at such high altitudes, with duct tape and a small heat pad used to keep the cameras warm. A GPS tracking system, CATtrack, sent a text displaying its location when rung, allowing it to be collected. However, the whole device cost only £350 to build.

The video also shows the box being built from scratch, and the journey to collect the device from a snowy field in Cambridgeshire.
