Recommended Website of the Month

Osalt.com is a great resource for those of you stapped for cash (or just plain tight) it is an open source alternative to all your favourite software tools.
In the Open vs. closed section you'll find open source alternatives to your favourite commercial products. You can browse through their software categories and compare pros and cons of both commercial products as well as open source software.
Osalt believe that by choosing an open source product, the user obtains a number of advantages compared to commercial products, with the main plus being that the software is free!
They also point out that not only is open source always available for free, but it is a transparent application, in that you are invited exclusively behind the scenes to view all source code and thereby to suggest improvements to the product. Furthermore, every product is covered by a large dedicated network, or community, who is more than willing to answer any questions, you may have. I'd love to go into what they offer, but the options are endless, but no doubt you'll have fun trying out a few new tools.
In a nutshell, the world is your oyster...mmmm nuts and oysters.

Andrew's big down under - but nothing a diet won't solve!

Andrew Booth, erstwhile director of Information Resources, is currently blazing a trail for Qualitative Systematic Review Methods at the Joanna Briggs Institute in Adelaide.

Following a four-day Methodological summit, in a windowless room at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Andrew and colleagues from Australia, Norway, Belgium and London (via South Africa) presented the results of their travails at a two day Cochrane Oceania Qualitative Research Methods Group Workshop. Andrew delivered presentations on Literature Searching for Qualitative Research and Presenting Data followed by a half-day Workshop on Narrative Synthesis.

Following a tradition first instituted in Bergen in January this year Andrew and colleagues were drenched with pouring and unbelievably cold rain. Fortunately the skies cleared for a post -workshop trip to the Barossa Valley, famed wine-making region, where the Group visited five different Wineries. Although Andrew will be returning home with chutnies and other confectures, due to logistic difficulties transporting wine across a hemisphere, it is a good job that he will not be weighed by Customs as he managed to sample a good amount of the vinicultural produce. Hope his return proceeds without any more hiccups.
