The Library Arcade

Posted by Andy

It's been a month since we had some fun and games on the blog, so thought it would be good to give the old grey matter a stretch with another library game hosted on the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries page.
This time you play as a student who must help his peers identify a number of research materials. Use your mouse to pick up their requests and then use the catalog to search for useful resources - easy I hear you say?

The Library Arcade features games designed to help students develop research skills through entertaining and easy-to-repeat activities.

Posted by Andy

Findings from a briefing study commissioned by the British Library and JISC to identify how the specialist researchers of the future, currently in their school or pre-school years, are
likely to access and interact with digital resources in five to ten years’ time.

The purpose of this study is to help library and information services anticipate and react to any new or emerging behaviours in the most effective way.

In this report, they define the `Google generation’ as those born after 1993 and explore the world of a cohort of young people with little or no recollection of life before the web. For a PDF of the briefing paper please click the link below.

The state of social care in England

The Commission for Social Care Inspection has published its third annual report to Parliament on the state of social care in England. The report explores the experiences of people not deemed eligible for state-supported social care. It shows that many younger disabled people and frail older people are being ‘signposted’ to voluntary services. Many are forced to rely on help from family and informal arrangementswhich can break down at short notice. People unable to rely on families or friends and unable to pay for care services themselves are left to cope with everyday life, while some become virtually trapped in their own home.
