Happy New Year!!!

Everyone at ScHARR Library Towers (yes this place does exist, honest), we'd like to extend our best wishes for 2009, may it bring you health, happiness and a bargain in the January bankruptcy sales.
2009, it's frightening to think how time is flying, it won't be too long before it's 2010 or 2009 (version 2.0). Anyway to herald the start of a new year, I thought I'd leave you with these pieces of wisdom.
"The moment we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold into a library, we've changed their lives forever, and for the better."
Barack Obama
Make thy books thy companions. Let thy cases and shelves be thy pleasure grounds and gardens. - Judah ibn-Tibbon (12th century)

To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul.- Cicero

Libraries are not made; they grow.- Augustine Birrell

Second hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack.- Virginia Woolf

It is impossible to enter a large library... without feeling an inward sensation of reverence, and without catching some sparks of noble emulation, from the mass of mind which is scattered around you.- James Crossley

I have lost all sense of home, having moved about so much. It means to me now -- only that place where the books are kept.- John Steinbeck

Books are lighthouses erected in the great sea of time. - Edwin P. Whipple
The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them.- Mark Twain

Hard-covered books break up friendships. You loan a hard covered book to a friend and when he doesn't return it you get mad at him. It makes you mean and petty. But twenty-five cent books are different. - John Steinbeck

Researching research use and research impact

The NIHR Service Delivery and Organisation (SDO) Programme is providing up
to £3m for research into partnerships between universities and NHS
organisations.

One of the aims of the research call is to fund projects that will produce
timely and accessible results that can inform the ongoing development of the
NIHR Collaborations for Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs). A further
aim is to make a substantial contribution to the developing international
literature on research use and research impact. Research teams are
encouraged to submit proposals that build on their own knowledge of this field
and develop it further in creative ways.

Full details of the call (ref CLA258) and contact details for queries can be
found at http://www.sdo.nihr.ac.uk/currentcalls.html

There will be an informal briefing meeting for potential applicants on
Wednesday 28 January in London.

The deadline for submission of proposals is Thursday 26 February 2009.

ADIOS HASTA MANANA

'Where has the time gone' it seems like a few weeks, certainly not 10 years. Information Resources has grown successfully over these 10 years. I would say that working at the University has been certainly the 'Best Job' in all my career, and the skills I brought here have enabled to develop both the team and myself. As for the team 'brilliant' we have had such fun, sadness, laughter, and been together through all lifes troubles and joys and supported each other through difficult times. We have organised several conferences and managed, many training/teaching courses both internally and externally. I have supported Andrew Booth through his role of 'International Player' which has enabled him to move on to a new wider role, where his skills can be used and valued.
Over the years the University and especially ScHARR has changed dramatically it has become sharper, more focussed, more people-oriented, and moved away from the old 'class' type of education system, and I am proud to have played a part in this.
My new role is working fully supporting Wendy Baird, Trent RDSU Director, the work is varied and I can use the skills I have learnt in Information Resources to help develop the 'New Short Course Unit' and update Trent Webpages and prepare for the next Annual Report.
Scharr-Lock has moved on at last, and it was time that I did too. My best wishes for continued success to Andrew and the 'Team' we go our seperate ways with good grace, and happy memories. Wishing everyone a "Good New Year"

All my best wishes Tricia
