Cool Tool # 8 - Pearl Trees

IRISS - Sharing Resources

Posted by Andy

It's been a few months since I posted a 'cool tool' and this one certainly falls under the cool logo, although how effective it is as a tool I can't decide - regardless of that, please don't be put off.
Pearl Trees are a way of creating multi-level visual book marks of your interests or resources. Each pearl tree has pearls hanging from it, so it's basically a replacement for your folders and favourites.

The pearl trees are very easy to make and within a matter of minutes you can have a large number of pearls hanging from various trees, especially if you install their tidy little toolbar extension.
On the downside, sharing and navigating can be a little unwieldy, although I'm sure that they will iron this out, then again it is a little pout of most comfort areas, so maybe we need to be patient with such new tools.

I've embedded a pearl tree I've made for our IRISS project in the library, to support students. I'd suggest you have a look at the embedded image, but perhaps you have a look at the pearl tree on a larger screen by following the Web address below.

The Social Network - Coming to a Cinema near you

Posted by Andy

A film about the most talked about website in Internet history starring Justin Timberlake. Whether the phenomenon that is Facebook and the rise of Mark Zuckerberg is enticing to the cinema going public only time will tell. All I can say is look out for a film coming out about the rise of Twitter starring Mark Wahlberg some time soon :-)

I was at the University of Greenwich yesterday at the "Future Learningscapes: a 21st Century Challenge" conference, presenting a poster on "Employing Web 2.0 Tools to Deliver E-learning Across Hemispheres" on behalf of myself and my colleagues Andy Tattersall & Andrew Booth.

The poster is based on a case study of the FOLIOz e-learning courses ScHARR IR deliver to librarians in Australia and New Zealand in association with ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association).

Happy 3rd Birthday ScHARR Library Blog

The ScHARR Library Blog has made it to its third birthday, along the way there's been tears, laughter, joy and pain...OK none of that, maybe a bit of laughter...and some tears; but the less said the better.
In that time we've posted more than 300 items, had over 11,000 visitors, and embedded every known widget at some time or another.
Hopefully we will be here in three years time :-)

Please raise a glass to the old girl.
